Marcel Coard:
Important Canapé Gondole, c.1925
Restoration
The sofa required more of a conservation-led approach to reflect its historical significance. The carved Indian Rosewood frame, featuring a distinctive basketwork motif, and all veneered sections were carefully treated to preserve their integrity. The silvered bronze edging and decorative bronze elements were gently cleaned and waxed to maintain their aged patina. Upholstery was removed down to the frame and sympathetically rebuilt using historically appropriate webbing and traditional tacking methods, before being reupholstered in a linen velvet chosen to complement the period character of the piece.
